Introduction
Welcome to the Battle Royale - a 3v3 tournament hosted by the RøyaL Clan! The signups for this tournament are open to players of any rank and/or skill level. The tournament will run throughout August, September and possibly into October. Players will be expected to commit to ONE SERIES A WEEK along with any applicable practice time with their team. We anticipate having 8 teams in a “Pro” division and 8 teams in a “Casual” division. The number of applicants could change the amount of teams in the Casual division and we will update this information as necessary. There is a small buy-in of $5 USD and a PRIZE POOL OF $500 Plus!
Scrimmages
This is a draft based tournament with “Pro” and “Casual” divisions. Team captains for each division will be selected after the signups have closed and prior to the live draft. Once the team captains are selected, the list will be updated in the Captains section below. Friendly scrimmages will take place before the live draft and (schedule permitting) will be casted live or recorded on the Royal Clan Twitch channel. The scrimmages are not mandatory, but it is in the interest of all participants. These scrimmage games will provide an opportunity for lesser known players to showcase their skills and for team captains to learn more about the players they will be drafting.
Draft
The live draft will take place after the signups and scrimmages have completed. Each captain will be given the list of tournament applicants and will draft their team with the highest rated captain picking last in each round. The captains will be given information submitted by the applicants during the signup period including ELO ranking, favorite/best civilizations and strategies, and time zones with availability. Once the “Pro” and “Casual” brackets have been filled through the draft, the results will be posted in the Draft Results section below.
Double Elimination
This tournament will employ the double elimination format, meaning each team must lose twice to be eliminated from the tournament. We will update this post to further explain how we plan to implement this.
Section 1: Captain Selection and the Draft
1.1) Team captains will be chosen from the highest ranked registrants. After sign ups are closed there will be a week or more prior to the draft for captains to see potential picks and get to play with participants in the tourney, so that captains can make better picks for a more fair and exciting tourney.
1.2) Captains will draft their team from the remaining registrants. The draft order will be the reverse order of the team captains’ ranking (highest ranked captain will draft last, lowest ranked will draft first).
1.3) If the team captains are not present during the draft then the tournament admin will pick the next highest ranked available player.
1.4) These teams will be set for the tournament. No substitutions can be made except on an emergency basis. Tournament admin must be consulted.
Section 2: Gameplay
2.1) All players must subscribe and activate the mod “RoyaL Tournament Maps” before electing “Multiplayer” from the main menu.
Subscribe to the map mod here or follow these steps to subscribe from the main menu:
2.2) All games to be played on Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition using the following settings:
2.3) If players have connection loss within 2 minutes of the game starting, they are allowed a restart. If a player is dropped from the game due to technical issues after the 2 minute mark, the game will continue unless the opposing team chooses to offer a restart (this is NOT an obligation). You may consult with the tournament admin at any point if you have any concerns.
2.4) During the game a teammate cannot tribute resources to a fellow teammate until the game has passed the 3 minute mark.
Section 3: Recorded Games
3.1) ALL GAMES MUST BE RECORDED. Please note that in game chat is recorded on DE and anything you type in game could be subject to discipline (see 6.2).
3.2) All recorded games must be submitted by the winning team. It is recommended that each player involved in a series locates and renames the appropriate recorded game file for each game to ensure the files are not overwritten and lost.
3.3) Recorded game files can be found here: This PC: > Local Disk (C:) > Users > (Name) > Games > Age of Empires 3 DE > (Steam ID) > Savegame.Name the files using the team names and game number. For example “team abc v team xyz game 1”.
Section 4: Maps
4.1) Maps will be played in the order according to the map pool on page 2. Each team can choose to veto a map one time before the start of the series (see 3.2). The first veto will be given to the lower seeded team (initial seeding based on the team captain’s ELO). Vetoed maps are stricken from the pool and the series will commence on the remaining maps in the order they appear in the map pool.
4.2) Map vetoes are to be made before the start of the series. The lower seeded team (according to the captain’s rank) will get the first veto. Extenuating circumstances will be reviewed by the tournament admin.
4.3) The lobby host must select the appropriate map according to the tournament round and map vetoes. The maps are numbered in order that they are to be played. For example, map 1.3 is the third map in the first round.
Section 5: Civilizations
5.1) In the first game of the series, each player will have a free choice of civs and match up of civs being determined by the players. Simple random number generation or coin toss can decide or players freely choose.
5.2) You can only win with a civ once as a team and you are not allowed to play a multitude of the same civ. For example if team 1 won game 1 with french, dutch, and sweden, they cannot play those 3 civs for the remainder of that series. This means you need 6 civs to win a best of 3.
5.3) In the second and consecutive games; the winning team must have one player pick their civilization first and the remaining players will select civilizations alternating between teams. Communicate in the lobby with other players when you have “locked” in your civilization before the next player chooses theirs.
Section 6: Disqualification
6.1) Map hacking, exploiting glitches, bug abuse, or cheating in any way will not be tolerated and any team will forfeit the tournament if they are caught cheating. If you have any suspicion about another player or team, finish the game and consult with the tournament admin.
6.2) Disrespectful behaviour will not be tolerated, including but not limited to: discrimination, harassment, and excessive trash talking.
6.3) Any player that is late to a scheduled match will be subjected to the following actions: a game will be forfeited by the party at fault after the first 15 minutes, and will continue to forfeit a game every 30 minutes until either, the late player(s) shows up or the entire series is forfeited. The admin team will do the best to their abilities to find a replacement player, but should not be taken for granted. A replacement player will have to be someone outside the tournament and of similar rank.
6.4) Streaming will be allowed for the round of 16.
6.5) NO COACHING or OUTSIDE HELP while in a tournament game.
6.6) No “smurfing”. Players must play on their main account and not have anyone else play on their account for them.
Map Pool: The teams must play the following maps in this specified order (unless a team vetoes).
Best of 3 (1 veto per team): Darfur, Niger Delta, Marshlands, Horn, Great Plains
Best of 5 (1 veto per team): Nile Valley, Saguenay, Sudd, Chad Lake, Pampas Sierras, Baja California, Central Plains
Best of 7 (1 veto per team): Savanna, Great Lakes, Gran Chaco, Great Plains, Manchuria, Sonora, Alaska, Dakota, Darfur
